Day 3

Hike to the Top of the Falls and Transfer to Kibale Forest National Park

Murchison Falls along the Nile River is a true masterpiece of nature! In a small space, a million cubic meters of water from the Nile squeeze itself through the Albertine gorge as it makes its way toward Egypt (6,853 km – 4,258 miles). Once you are on top of the falls and see the entire Nile going through a small gap, it makes sense why so many visitors make this trip. The Nile River is about 50 meters wide on top just before the falls. It drops down 43 meters through a 7-meter-wide gorge.
The journey to the top is long, but definitely worth it. The thunderous spectacle and noise made by the water as it passes through the tiny hole are magnificent, not to be missed by anyone, as no words can describe this display. Afterward, transfer to Kibale National Park where you will stay for the night.

There is also a wonderfully diverse concentration of other primates, more than any other forest in East Africa. Besides our delightful cousins, the chimpanzees, you can find red colobus, red-tailed guenon, grey-cheeked mangabey, blue and white-nosed monkey, L’Hoest’s monkey, and the black and white colobus monkey. This morning, you start your journey to Bwindi National park en-route to the Ishasha Sector. You will drive to the southern part of Queen Elizabeth National Park (Ishasha sector). This part is famous for its tree-climbing lions. While lion cubs around the world frequently climb trees for fun, adults rarely do. However, these lionesses enjoy spending their time snoozing in fig trees to get away from the tsetse flies and to enjoy a cool breeze. This is the most memorable sight in the park as you have never seen such photogenic lions posing for your camera before. Meanwhile, don’t miss the stunning scenery and superb birdlife in this southern remote section of the park.

Encountering the rare and endangered mountain gorillas of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, is an experience of a lifetime. Half of the world’s population of gorillas live under the mist-covered canopies of Uganda’s oldest and most biologically diverse rainforest. In the company of an experienced park ranger, you will be tracking the whereabouts of one of the nine habituated family groups who live in the park. Depending on the location of the gorillas, the walk can take anything from 2 to 7 hours. Once the family of gorillas has been located, settle in to your surroundings and enjoy the hour you have to quietly observe these fascinating primates whose habits and mannerisms remind us so much of our own.
If time and energy allows, visit the Batwa people and learn about their culture, way of living and origin. Did you know that this is the shortest and most remote tribe in the country?
